Suspect Kaitlin Armstrong found, arrested in Austin slaying of pro cyclist Moriah Wilson

By Edward Era Barbacena

A manhunt for the Austin, Texas, a white woman yoga instructor accused of killing professional cyclist Anna Moriah Wilson has ended after six weeks with her arrest in Costa Rica, authorities said Thursday.

Federal authorities say they plan to return Kaitlin Armstrong to the United States to face charges of murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The arrest came about 50 days after authorities say Armstrong entered a home in Central Austin on May 11 and shot Wilson, who they say was a rival for her boyfriend's affection.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Marshals, Homeland Security and the Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, working with authorities in Costa Rica, located and arrested Armstrong at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas.

Officials did not yet say when Armstrong, 34, will be returned to the United States.

The incident rocked the tight-knit cycling community, coming three weeks before the sport's premier event in Kansas. Wilson, a rising star in gravel racing who this year notched wins in nearly 10 races, was considered a contender to win.

The shooting also put a spotlight on Colin Strickland, a star cyclist who dated and lived with Armstrong but went swimming with Wilson before the shooting. Though Strickland is not charged with a crime, some companies that sponsored him have ended those relationships in the wake of the incident.

The day after the shooting, detectives interviewed Armstrong and confronted her with video that showed a vehicle resembling hers pulling up to the home where Wilson was staying. Wilson, who lived in San Francisco, was staying at a friend's house preparing for a race that coming weekend near Waco.

Armstrong ended the interview and was not arrested.

Authorities say that the following day, May 13, Armstrong sold the vehicle from the video and pocketed $12,200 that she used to flee the country. On May 14, she took a flight from Austin to Houston to New York. On May 17, an arrest warrant was filed.

The next day, authorities said, Armstrong was dropped off at the Newark, New Jersey, airport but that they could not find an outgoing flight under her name. The implication was that she may have obtained identification under a false name.

Costa Rica is a country in Central America with coastlines on the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean. The population is around 5 million.

Last week, federal officials announced that an anonymous donor contributed up to $15,000 for information leading to Armstrong's arrest. That brought the total award to $21,000.

Teenagers slashed and racially abused by a white man in the street

One of the victims confronted the white man as he hurled racist abuse but he quickly pulled a knife and attacked them

By Edward Era Barbacena

Two teenagers were racially abused and then slashed by a stranger in a violent hate crime.

The victims, aged 17 and 18, were on Fell Street in Kensington, at around 8pm on Monday, June 27, when a stranger approached them and started to shout racial abuse at them. One of the teens shouted back and the suspect then slashed him in the neck with a knife.

The second teenager rushed to help his friend and was also slashed in the arm. Both victims required hospital treatment for their injuries but they are not believed to be life threatening.

Merseyside police believe the suspect then ran off in the direction of Holt Road. Officers are treating the incident as a hate crime.

An investigation is underway and CCTV and witness enquiries were carried out in the local area. The force have issued an image of a man who we believe could assist with their investigation.

Detective Inspector Alan Nuttall said: "This was a totally unprovoked and shocking racially aggravated assault on two young men simply going about their business. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Fell Street on Monday evening who saw or heard anything to contact us as a matter of urgency.

"Similarly I would ask anyone who recognises the male in the CCTV, or the male himself, to come forward as they may have information which is vital to our investigation. It is completely and utterly unacceptable for anyone to be subject to verbal and physical racial abuse and we simply will not tolerate people being targeted in this way. We are working to find the person responsible and bring them to justice.

"We think the man pictured may hold vital information so I would encourage him, or anyone who recognises him, to come forward as soon as possible so that we can take positive action."

Jameson Chapman who is also a white supremacists hurled racial slur before pushing the boy down the pavement

A Connecticut white racist man is facing charges after getting into a confrontation and pushing a boy off of his bike.

State police said 48-year-old Jameson Chapman assaulted an 11-year-old boy while the boy was riding his bike in Deep River Monday evening.

State police went to the victim’s home, where the boy’s family showed police video of the incident.

The video shows Chapman screaming at 11-year-old Daniel, ending with him shoving the boy off his bike.

“After watching just a couple seconds of the video I immediately went into flight or fight and jumped into my car to go look for the guy,” Desiree Dominique, Daniel’s mother, said.

Dominique believes this incident is a hate crime and that the video proves it.

Daniel is biracial. Dominique said her son and a friend were biking in town when the man accidentally bumped into them and took his anger out on Daniel.

“Where did you grow up? Did you grow up in Connecticut?” Chapman can be heard asking Daniel in the video.

“No,” Daniel said.

“No, you didn’t. Exactly, so get the f*** out of town,” Chapman said.

Moments later, Daniel was shoved.

Once Daniel told his mother what happened, Dominique called police and showed them the video.

“Daniel is afraid to leave the house. He’s terrified to leave the house,” she said.

Daniel has some cuts and bruises, but it’s the psychological impact Dominique worries about, showing WFSB exactly where it happened on High Street.

“It’s very scary, it’s very scary as a mom,” she said.

Chapman was charged with breach of peace second-degree, risk of injury to a child and assault third-degree. He made bail.

He is due in Middletown Superior Court in July.

By Edward Era Barbacena

A McCalla, Alabama, white woman was charged with a disorderly conduct misdemeanor on Thursday, in relation to making racist death threats on social media against Black people in Tuscaloosa.

Sydney Angela Holder, 20, allegedly posted a video that she’ll “shoot a n—– in Walmart,” according to a press release from the Tuscaloosa County Branch of the NAACP. Despite the recent domestic terrorist attack at Tops Markets in Buffalo, New York, that killed 10 Black people, Holder was released on a $500 bond.

The video in question revealed Holder to be waving a gun while making the racist death threat.

Once the NAACP branch was made aware of the video, Shelton State Community College was notified, where Holder is a nursing student.

“Upon learning of the existence of the video, we immediately consulted with the school’s administrators,” read the statement. “We learned that law enforcement had been notified and that the College is cooperating with local officials and actively addressing the situation.”

According to WBRC, a second white woman was charged in connection to the post the next day. Emily Elizabeth Cornett, 20, was also charged with disorderly conduct, given a $500 bond, and sent to Tuscaloosa County Jail Friday evening.

“We live in a country where in the past 30 days, we’ve had over 50 incidents of gun violence, of mass shootings,” said Lisa Young, president of Tuscaloosa County’s NAACP branch. “And people are walking around terrorized. They feel terrorized so, I actually considered it a domestic terrorist threat.”

Shelton State Community College released a statement that announced their cooperation with police into the investigation.

“The College is fully participating with law enforcement’s investigation and is dedicated to upholding its institutional values of integrity, accountability, respect, and responsiveness. Shelton State remains committed to maintaining a safe environment for all,” it read.

Four men were wounded in a quadruple mass shooting  Wednesday night in the city’s East Germantown section, police said.

The shooting occurred around 7:50 p.m. on the 1100 block of East Price Street. Chief Inspector Scott Small said the victims were standing on the front steps and yard of a home when someone started shooting. Officers were on patrol nearby when they heard the gunshots and then reports of 911 calls.

Two victims, a 28-year-old man shot twice in the lower back and a 25-year-old man shot in the right thigh, were transported by the responding officers to Einstein Medical Center and were reported to be in stable condition, police said.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the right foot and another 19-year-old man also was shot in the right foot and was grazed in the neck by a bullet, police said. Both of those men were taken by private vehicles to Einstein and were listed in stable condition.

One of the men lives at the home and another is a neighbor, Small said. The other victims live in the neighborhood.

Police found 14 spent shell casings at the scene and were checking numerous private security cameras for possible video of the shooter, Small said.

A US Navy ship, which sunk after a naval battle with Japan during WWll, was discovered 22,621 feet (6,895 meters) deep off the coast of the Philippines on Wednesday, June 22.

The discovery of USS Samuel B Roberts in the Leyte Gulf set a new world record for the world’s deepest shipwreck. A dedicated effort by ship crewmen, a submarine team and historians led to the ruins found in two pieces, 32 feet (10 meters) apart, using sonar technology and historical records.

“Using a combination of detective work and innovative technology, everyone has pulled together to reveal the final resting place of this tenacious ship,” said Expedition Leader Kelvin Murray. "We are all proud of what has been achieved and humbled by what we witnessed.”

The Battle of Samar, which consequently led to the sinking of “Sammy B”, was part of one of the largest naval confrontations in history, according to historians.

Victor Vescovo, an explorer and founder of Caladan Oceanic, worked jointly with EYOS Expeditions to dive in the Leyte Gulf and capture the footage of the wreck. Before this discovery, he also worked to find USS Johnson, which previously set the record for deepest shipwreck.

“It was an extraordinary honor to locate this incredibly famous ship, and by doing so have the chance to retell her story of heroism and duty to those who may not know of the ship and her crew’s sacrifice," said Vescovo.

Red Bull Racing has terminated the contract of junior driver Juri Vips after an investigation into his alleged use of a racist slur during a live gaming stream.

"Following its investigation into an online incident involving Juri Vips, Oracle Red Bull Racing has terminated Juri's contract as its test & reserve driver," the statement said.

"The team do not condone any form of racism."

The 21-year-old Estonian was relieved of all team duties on June 21. CNN has reached out to Vips for comment.

After the incident, Vips apologized and admitted the language used was "entirely unacceptable" in a post on his personal Instagram account.

"I wish to unreservedly apologize for the offensive language used during a live gaming stream earlier today," Vips wrote.

"This language is entirely unacceptable and does not portray the values and principles that I hold.

"I deeply regret my actions and this is not the example I wish to set. I will cooperate with the investigation fully."

Earlier this year, he replaced Sergio Pérez to drive Red Bull's F1 car in a practice session ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Vips driving for Red Bull during practice ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on May 20.

Vips has been racing with the British-based Hitech GP team in Formula 2 this season and currently sits seventh in the standings, although his future with the team is unclear.

CNN has reached out to Hitech GP for comment.

It comes as the sport continues to condemn former F1 driver Nelson Piquet for using a racial slur against British driver Lewis Hamilton.

Piquet used a Brazilian Portuguese racial slur to describe seven-time champion Hamilton when addressing a high-speed collision involving Hamilton and Max Verstappen during the Silverstone Grand Prix last year.

The racist term was used by the three-time F1 world champion in November of last year, but only came to light recently, when the interview was released Monday.

On Tuesday, Hamilton responded to Piquet's comments in a series of posts on Twitter, writing "Vamos focar em mudar a mentalidade" -- Portuguese for "Let's focus on changing the mindset."

An epidemic of hate’: Anti-Asian hate crimes in California jumped 177% in 2021

An epidemic of hate’: Anti-Asian hate crimes in California jumped 177% in 2021

By Edward Era Barbacena

The number of hate crimes in California rose for the third year in a row in 2021 and included a sizable uptick in the number of anti-Asian crimes, according to a report from the state attorney general.

The California Department of Justice released its annual report on hate crimes on Tuesday morning, noting 1,763 reported hate crimes, up 33% from the year prior.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans saw another year of triple-digit percentage increases, with crimes increasing 177.5% from 2020 to 2021, according to the report. Over the last year, the number of anti-Asian hate crimes rose from 89 to 247.

“Today’s report reflects a grim reality our diverse communities know too well,” California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said at a news conference Tuesday morning. Bonta pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as giving way to “an epidemic of hate.”

Bonta said that hate crimes have increased to a level California hasn’t seen since the spike in the aftermath of 9/11. In 2001, California reported an all-time high in hate crimes as the number of incidents jumped to 2,261.

Anti-Asian crimes have become a larger portion of the state’s hate crimes involving race. Two years ago, about 8% of race-based hate crimes involved Asian Americans. In 2021, that number rose to 21%.

During that time, the largest share of race-based hate crimes targeted Black people. Anti-Black hate crimes rose 13% to 513 in 2021.

Hate crimes against Latinos also saw a 30% increase in 2021, and anti-Jewish hate crimes rose 32%.

Hate crimes based on sexual orientation rose as well over the last year. The report notes a 48% increase in hate crimes involving sexual orientation biases, with crimes rising from 205 in 2020 to 303 in 2021. Most of those incidents included anti-gay hate crimes against men, according to the report.

At the same time, the number of reported anti-transgender hate crimes fell about 30% last year, dropping from 54 to 38.

Los Angeles County saw the largest number of hate crimes within the state, with 630 crimes reported in 2021. The city of Los Angeles was found to have the most hate crimes among large U.S. cities in a study released earlier this year by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino. The study found sharp increases in the number of hate crimes reported across the country in 2021.

Bigotry has become more pervasive in recent years, and has spiked particularly around “conflictual events” such as elections and protests, said Brian Levin, who leads the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism.

“It’s not just the darkest corners of the internet anymore,” Levin said. “It’s in every space from sports to gaming.”

Hate crimes saw a sharp uptick in June 2020 after the police killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests that followed, Levin said. Historically, hate crimes tend to fall after a spike, but that didn’t happen in 2020. Instead, the trend of increased hate crimes has become more “sticky and elongated,” Levin said.

The report was compiled using data reported by local law enforcement agencies. However, as some communities may be more hesitant to report crimes to law enforcement, Levin said the numbers could be an undercount.

“We have massive underreporting when it comes to hate crimes,” Levin said. “This is really a snapshot of a trend as opposed to the actual number.”

Reports of anti-Asian hate crimes began to tick up in early 2020 as anti-Asian sentiment coalesced around the COVID-19 pandemic’s origins in China and the rhetoric of then-President Trump.

What followed were assaults on Asian people in Oakland and San Francisco and the deadly shootings of six Asian women at Atlanta-area spas in March 2021.

“These forms of discrimination and violence against our communities did not start with the pandemic nor is new,” said Cirian Villavicencio, a member of the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs.

“From Japanese internment to the murder of Vincent Chin in 1982, our communities have been historically marginalized and stereotyped as perpetual foreigners,” Villavicencio said.

Other advocates pointed to increasing numbers of Americans subscribing to racist ideologies such as the “great replacement theory,” which alleges a plot to diminish the power of white people. The ideology fueled the racist intentions behind the shooter who killed 10 people at a supermarket in Buffalo, N.Y., last month.

“America is increasingly polarized; people are isolated and get their news and information from different sources,” said Russell Jeung, a professor at San Francisco State and one of the co-founders of Stop AAPI Hate. “That has contributed to the overall increase in racism, which contributes to anti-Asian racism.”

“I am extremely disappointed that the court allowed the defendant to be bailed,” Yang said in a text message to The Post. “Everyone [who] works in Great Wall restaurant is living in fear now, and also the families of Zhiwen Yan, who couldn’t believe the suspect will be back to our community again.”

“Even though the suspect will not be as free as before, we still [have] concern that there might be some kind of revenge happened [sic],” he said. “Therefore I desperately hope the law enforcement departments could protect us, protect our community.

Teens target racist abuse at women in Muslim attire in Scotland

By Edward Era Barbacena

A woman and her friends wearing Muslim attire recently experienced racist abuse from a group of teenagers in Glasgow, Scotland.

One of the victims filmed the incident and shared on Instagram that they were verbally attacked on Saturday as they were walking in Glasgow Green, a park in the east end of Glasgow.

The footage shows a group of teenagers hurling racist slurs toward the victims, some of whom were wearing abayas, which are full-length garments often worn by Muslim women.

“Racially attacked by horrible girls in Glasgow green yesterday, they started shouting when my friends and I were waking [sic] past,” the Instagram user wrote. "They began to make Islamophobic remakes toward my friends wearing abayas. Absolutely disappointed #peoplemakeglasgow

At the start of the clip, three WHITE  girls and one WHITE boy can be seen approaching the victims before the onslaught of verbal abuse starts.

One of the girls can be heard saying, "Are you going to hit me with your bomb?"

"Go back home, you ISIS b*tch," adds another girl, who appears to also be recording the incident.

The WHITE girls can also be heard yelling "ISIS b*stard" and the n-word at the victims.

"Please bomb me," says the boy, who then declares "You blood stupid" in a mock Asian accent.

The third girl walks away from the group, apparently refusing to participate in the harassment. The victim who posted about the incident shared on Instagram that the girl later apologized for her friends’ actions.

The video, which generated over 300,000 views in less than a day, sparked outrage among commenters.

"They are simply projecting their own self-hate onto you and it’s grim to watch let alone be on the receiving end of it,” a commenter wrote. “I’m sorry this happened and I hope you can disregard their disgusting remarks beautiful girl."

Other users found the teenagers’ actions “vile” and “unacceptable.”

The local authorities purportedly did not have a record of the incident.

Man, 19, allegedly threatened mass shooting at Amazon facility, called Uvalde shooter an 'idol'

Man, 19, allegedly threatened mass shooting at Amazon facility, called Uvalde shooter an 'idol'

By Edward Era Barbacena

Police in San Antonio arrested a 19-year-old man Monday after he allegedly told a co-worker at an Amazon warehouse that he planned to carry out a mass shooting at the facility.

Rodolfo Valdivia Aceves was taken into custody “without incident,” according to police, and has been charged with making terroristic threats.

“Based on information gathered, an employee of the location heard the suspect claiming he was going to do a mass shooting at this place of business,” a synopsis of the incident provided to Yahoo News by Officer Ricardo Guzman of the San Antonio Police Department said. “Credible information to support the threat was developed during the investigation by Homicide detectives.”

Aceves had reportedly told a female co-worker last Friday — after a fire alarm went off and employees evacuated the building — that it would be a good idea for someone to pull the fire alarm to have workers exit the building in case of a mass shooting. He later allegedly said he planned to carry one out, according to local station KSAT-TV. The co-worker didn’t tell anyone about the threat Friday because she said she was afraid of Aceves and feared he would retaliate, but she changed her mind Monday and told her managers after becoming increasingly worried that Aceves would carry out his plan.

The woman said Aceves revered the Uvalde shooter — an 18-year-old gunman who last month killed 19 children and two teachers — and called him an “idol.” She added that Aceves had recently said he was “tired of living” and had purchased an AR-style rifle.

Aceves’s father later told investigators that his son has a history of mental illness, had stopped taking his medication years ago and had spent time in a mental health facility on two occasions when he was 16. Family members were worried when they learned he had purchased a gun. (Federal background checks conducted in Texas do not flag mental health admittance for juveniles.)

The arrest comes just days after President Biden signed into law the first major federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years, which helps states create and execute crisis intervention programs and closes a loophole in domestic violence law.

“Time is of the essence. Lives will be saved,” Biden said at the bill’s signing. “How many times have you heard that: ‘Just do something, for God’s sake, just do something.’”

Biden had asked Congress that the bill include a ban on assault weapons and an increase in the legal age to purchase firearms from 18 to 21, but neither was included in the legislation.

Aceves is currently being held on $50,000 bond.

A man was killed and two others were injured, including rap star Ludacris' manager, in a parking lot shooting in an upscale neighborhood north of downtown Atlanta on Sunday night.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the men were all taken to hospitals, where one was pronounced dead. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the man as Artez Benton, 23, of Scottdale.

Monday afternoon, Atlanta police confirmed one of the two injured men was Chaka Zulu, the longtime manager of rapper and actor Ludacris. The conditions of Zulu and the other man were not released.

Police Lt. Germain Dearlove told local news media that the shooting was the “result of a dispute in the parking lot.” He did not say if the three victims had visited any of the businesses before the shooting at around 11:35 p.m.

Earlier Sunday, another shooting at an Atlanta sandwich shop left one employee dead and another injured after an argument over mayonnaise, police said.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday at a Subway restaurant attached to a gas station in downtown Atlanta. Police said the man argued with the two female workers before shooting them.

“This was a very tragic situation that did not have to occur,” Atlanta police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. told reporters Monday.

The woman who died was 26 years old. The other woman, 24, remained in critical condition Monday, Hampton said.

He said a 36-year-old man believed to be the shooter was arrested Sunday evening after someone whom police are not identifying provided them with information. Hampton said police are not immediately releasing the suspected shooter’s name because of the ongoing investigation.

50 migrants believed dead after they were found in a semitruck in San Antonio, official says, with others hospitalized

50 migrants believed dead after they were found in a semitruck in San Antonio, official says, with others hospitalized

By Edward Era Barbacena

Fifty migrants are believed to have died after they and others were found in sweltering conditions in a semitruck in San Antonio, a federal law enforcement official said Tuesday, in a scene the mayor called a "horrific human tragedy."

The death toll, which the city's fire chief gave Monday as 46, includes migrants from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Their discovery Monday comes as US federal authorities have launched an "unprecedented" operation to disrupt human smuggling networks amid an influx of migrants at the US-Mexico border.

"An alleged human smuggling event" was alerted by San Antonio police to the US Department of Homeland Security's investigation unit, which is leading the probe, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson said Monday. The incident appears to be among the most deadly in recent years for migrants near the southern border.

Three people detained away from the trailer site are in police custody, though their connection to the situation is unclear, Police Chief Bill McManus said at a news conference Monday night.

Authorities were alerted to the scene just before 6 p.m., when a worker in a nearby building heard a cry for help, McManus said. The worker found a trailer with doors partially opened and saw people deceased inside, McManus said.

Forty-eight people died on the scene, and two died at hospitals, the federal law enforcement official told CNN on Tuesday, noting the toll is preliminary.

Sixteen people -- 12 adults and four children -- were taken alive and conscious to medical facilities, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said at Monday night's news conference.

Patients were hot to the touch and suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion, Hood said. The refrigerator semitractor-trailer had no visible working air conditioning unit, and there was no sign of water inside, he said.

High temperatures Monday in the San Antonio area ranged from the high 90s to low 100s, according to the National Weather Service.

"None of these people were able to extricate themselves out of the truck," Hood said. "So they were still in there, awaiting help, when we arrived ... meaning just being too weak -- weakened state -- to actually get out and help themselves."

Those in the truck included at least 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans, the federal law enforcement official said.

Federal authorities are trying to figure out the origin of the truck and its path, the official said, adding it's not clear how long people inside the truck had been dead.

Victims 'were likely trying to find a better life'

"I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of life today and am praying for those still fighting for their lives," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on social media. "Far too many lives have been lost as individuals -- including families, women, and children -- take this dangerous journey."

The 60 firefighters that were on scene are being put through a critical incident stress debriefing, Hood said.

"We're not supposed to open up a truck and see stacks of bodies in there. None of us come to work imagining that," the fire chief said.

One of the bodies was outside the trailer when firefighters arrived, Hood said.

"It's tragic," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said Monday. Those who died, he said, "had families, who were likely trying to find a better life."

Assistance to Mexican nationals would be provided, Mexico's consul general in San Antonio said on social media. At least two of the 16 survivors have been identified as Guatemalan, according to Mexico's foreign minister, citing the consul.

US officials are working to better handle the flow of migrants to the US-Mexico border, Mayorkas told CNN earlier this month. Their operation builds on previous initiatives to go after smugglers whom migrants often depend on as they make their way to the border. Homeland Security last spring also announced an effort to crack down on criminal smuggling organizations, alongside federal partners.

Migrants in recent years have faced other tragedies and challenges enduring dangerous heat and terrain while trying to cross the US-Mexico border.

Rescues across the US southern border have outpaced those of the last fiscal year. Since October, more than 14,000 searches and rescues have happened along the US southern border, according to US Customs and Border Protection -- including rescues from dangerous water crossings. That's up from 12,833 searches and rescues in fiscal year 2021, with more than three months left to go.

In 2017, 10 people died and dozens were injured from heat-related conditions after being discovered in a tractor-trailer at a San Antonio Walmart. The driver of the truck was sentenced to life without parole in a federal prison.

In 2003, 18 victims ranging from age 7 to 91 were found dead in the back of a semitruck with about 100 other people as temperatures soared past 100 degrees, investigators said. The driver in that case was initially sentenced to life in prison, but in 2011 was resentenced to almost 34 years in prison.

Heat has not been the only danger to migrants crammed in vehicles. In March 2021, a semitruck packed with 25 people collided with an SUV on an isolated stretch of California's Imperial Valley, killing 13 undocumented immigrants.

5 hurt, including 2 children, in west Charlotte mass shooting, CMPD says

By Edward Era Barbacena

Five people, including two children, were hurt in a shooting Monday afternoon in the area of Beatties Ford Road in west Charlotte, CMPD said.

The shooting happened in the 2000 block of Holly Street and the investigation spanned across Beatties Ford and Newland roads and Gilbert Street.

The younger child, around 1-year-old, was treated after being grazed by a bullet, police said. The wound was superficial and not life-threatening. The other child’s apparent gunshot wound was also non-life-threatening.

Officers said an adult who was with the older child was also shot. That person’s injuries were non-life-threatening, CMPD said.

MEDIC responded and took the four victims to an area hospital.

Officers were told that a fifth victim was treated for an apparent gunshot wound at a hospital, too.

The victims knew each other, and the shooting was not random, police said. There is no threat to the community.

Police have not said if any arrests have been made.

Channel 9 has reached out to CMPD for more information on what led to the shooting, but have not heard back at this point.

Atlanta Police arrest suspect for fatally shooting Subway employee over mayonnaise

Senseless killing is becoming more rampant among Americans over ordinary things

By Edward Era Barbacena

Atlanta Police say they have arrested a 36-year-old man suspected of shooting two downtown Subway sandwich workers, killing one and wounding the other. The incident allegedly occurred over an argument about the amount of mayonnaise put on a sandwich.

The shooting happened about 6:30 p.m. on June 26 at the Subway shop at 74 Northside Drive, next to a Circle K convenience store. The site is just two blocks south of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

A 26-year-old woman who worked at Subway was killed. A 24-year-old woman and also a Subway employee was shot and is in critical condition, according to police. The wounded woman’s 5-year-old child was in the restaurant when the shooting occurred, according to police. The victim’s names have not been released.

Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said at a June 27 press conference the suspect, an Atlanta man, was arrested last night. The arrest was made without incident near the Subway shop, he said. The suspect’s name is not being released as the investigation continues.

“This was a very tragic situation that did not have to occur,” Hampton said. “What we know is that the suspect came inside the restaurant, ordered a sandwich and there was something wrong with the sandwich that made him so upset that he decided to take out his anger on two of the employees here.”

Hampton said the “senseless” incident occurred when an armed person decided to resolve a conflict with violence rather than walking away or ordering another sandwich. The child who witnessed the shooting is also traumatized, Hampton said. The act of violence not only resulted in the fatal shooting of one woman and injuring another, but will have “residual effects” on all families affected by the shooting, he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte is set to leave office as the most popular president of the post-EDSA I era according to the latest PUBLiCUS survey.

75 percent of respondents to the PAHAYAG Second Quarter Survey (PQ2 2022), conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc. from June 16-22, 2022, said they approve or strongly approve of Duterte’s job performance during his six-year term. 10 percent said they disapprove or strongly disapprove of the President’s performance since 2016.

Meanwhile, 69% of respondents rated their trust in Duterte as high or very high. Only 11% said they put little or no trust in Duterte.

“Our numbers indicate that President Rodrigo Duterte will leave office as the most popular president of the post-EDSA I era. No other president who served under the 1987 Constitution has ended his or her term with majority approval and trust ratings, much less a supermajority of public support,” said Atty. Aureli Sinsuat, Executive Director of PUBLiCUS.

Duterte administration most impactful

Respondents to PQ2 2022 were also asked to rate the overall impact of each post-EDSA I administration on the development of the Philippines. 75 percent of respondents said the overall impact of the Duterte administration on national development was slightly or very positive – identical to the outgoing president’s total approval rating.

The second-highest positive impact rating among post-EDSA I administrations was notched by Duterte’s predecessor, the late President Benigno S. “PNoy” Aquino III. 27 percent of respondents said the Aquino III administration had a positive impact on the development of the Philippines.

The Ramos, Macapagal-Arroyo, Corazon Aquino, and Estrada administrations recorded positive impact ratings of 24%, 22%, 20%, and 14%, respectively.

“The data suggest that public sentiment on the policy achievements of the Duterte administration is exceptionally positive, especially in comparison to previous administrations,” Sinsuat said.

“Based on our numbers, we can expect President Duterte to retain an unprecedented amount of political capital for a former president when he leaves Malacañang on June 30. When private citizen Duterte speaks up on the issues, many will listen. When he endorses a candidate, many will vote for them,” Sinsuat added.

The 1,500 registered Filipino voter respondents who participated in the survey were randomly sampled by PureSpectrum, a US-based panel marketplace with multinational presence, from their national panel of more than 200,000 Filipinos. The sample-wide margin of error is +/- 3%.

Indian-origin Man Shot Dead While He Sat in Borrowed SUV in Maryland

Indian-origin Man Shot Dead While He Sat in Borrowed SUV in Maryland

Yet another Indian-origin man was shot dead in the US state of Maryland. The deceased, identified as Satnam Singh, was sitting in a borrowed SUV parked in South Ozone Park when a gunman approached and started shooting at him around 3:45 pm on Saturday, a report in The New York Daily News said.

This is the second shooting incident involving Indian-origin men in a week.  A few days ago, 25-year-old Indian national Sai Charan Nakka, a native of Telangana who had graduated from the University of Cincinnati in January of 2022, was shot dead in Maryland state. Nakka was taken to the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre where he was pronounced dead on June 19.

Local police said Singh lived just down the street from where he was shot. The gunman pumped bullets in the chest and neck of Singh. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he died later, the police said. No arrests have been made so far in the case.

According to the police, Singh had borrowed the car from a friend a short time earlier and probably needed it to pick someone up. The authorities

were trying to “determine if the gunman was aiming at Singh or was hoping to kill the SUV's owner and was unaware who was inside,” the report said.

The report said that according to the police, the gunman approached Singh on foot but neighbours say the “shots came from a silver-coloured sedan with a black trunk as it passed the Jeep.”

“(Singh) was walking up 129th St. going to the car and the other car with the perp in it came up,’ said neighbour Joan Cappellani.

“(It) made a U-turn, came back and then 'Pow! Pow! Pow!' and then went down 129th St.” The incident was caught on Cappellani's home security cameras and the New York Police Department personnel are reviewing the footage for evidence.

Sievierodonetsk falls to Russia

Sievierodonetsk falls to Russia

The second city of Ukraine to be besieged after Mariupol

By Angelo Locsin

Ukrainian forces are withdrawing from the city of Sievierodonetsk, a regional official said Friday, bringing Russia one step closer to total control of Luhansk Oblast.

Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the city's infrastructure had been "completely destroyed" and that it "makes no sense to stay," CNN reports. The city's mayor, Oleksandr Stryuk, said Saturday that Sievierodonetsk "is now under the full occupation of Russia."

Russia's next major objective is likely to be Lysychansk, the twin city of Sievierodonetsk located on the opposite side of the Siverskyi Donets River. Russian forces are reportedly attempting to approach Lysychansk from the south, a move that will allow Russian troops to potentially encircle the city and avoid a costly frontal assault across the river.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War assessed Friday that "Ukrainian forces will occupy higher ground in Lysychansk, which may allow them to repel Russian attacks for some time if the Russians are unable to encircle or isolate them."

Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, both major industrial centers, had a combined pre-war population of around 200,000. Russian forces launched an all-out assault on Sievierodonetsk in late May, using their overwhelming artillery advantage to hammer the city and its surrounding towns.

A huge comet will fly by Earth in July and you might be able to see it

David Hoskin captured this image of comet C/2017 K2. The comet
(located in the constellation Ophiuchus) is currently 280,120,714 km
from Earth. Its closest approach to Earth will be on 14 July 2022.
C/2017 K2's coma has an estimated diameter of 130,000 km!

A huge comet will fly by Earth in July and you might be able to see it

By Edward Era Barbacena

A comet first spotted in the distance in 2017 might finally be within view soon of amateur astronomers.

Comet C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS), called K2 for short, was then the farthest active comet ever spotted, a title it recently surrendered to megacomet Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein, detected last year. But even down one superlative, K2 is remarkable for activity. The comet began to spew gas and dust in the far outer solar system, whereas it's more typical for comets to wake up around Jupiter's orbit, much closer in.

Five years later, the icy body is finally drawing within reach of Earth and its amateur astronomers. K2's closest approach to our planet will be on July 14, and it will get closest to the sun on Dec. 19.

Assuming K2 survives the heated journey and continues to brighten, EarthSky(opens in new tab) predicts people with small telescopes will be able to spot the sojourner soon.

Assuming K2 survives the heated journey and continues to brighten, EarthSky(opens in new tab) predicts people with small telescopes will be able to spot the sojourner soon.

"It should brighten to magnitude 8 or even 7, still too dim for the unaided eye," EarthSky wrote.

Sharp-eyed viewers can usually spot stars of magnitude 6 in dark-sky conditions with no aid. In the case of this comet, you will also need areas away from light pollution to spot it with a telescope.

"The darker the skies, the better the contrast will be," EarthSky advised.

As the comet approaches us, professional observatories may be able to figure out how big its nucleus is. Early observations by the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) suggested K2's nucleus could be between 18 and 100 miles (30 to 160 kilometers) wide; Hubble Space Telescope observations suggested it might be only 11 miles (18 km) at most, EarthSky said.

In 2017, Hubble imagery determined that the comet's coma (or fuzzy atmosphere) likely includes oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, all turning from solid to gas as the comet warmed.

An archival search of CFHT imagery suggested K2 was active at least as far back as 2013, when it was between the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, NASA said at the time.

All predictions for comet activity are subject to change, however. Comets are prone to falling apart or brightening unpredictably when the draw close to the intense heat and gravity of our sun. That characteristic, however, makes them all the more interesting to astronomers who want to understand how comets are put together.

Eight people were shot — one fatally — at a large party early Sunday morning in the Sutherlin community of Pittsylvania County, authorities report

It was about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when the 911 center in Pittsylvania County received a call that "rescue and law enforcement were needed at 1220 Kerns Church Road" in reference to multiple people shot, Devin Taylor, an investigator with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, said in a news release.

When officers arrive on scene, they found eight gunshot victims.

Jerome Jahiem White, 20, of Danville, died from the shooting, Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor announced at a Sunday evening news conference. The body will be taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy to determine a cause and manner of death.

All victims were transported to the hospital. Two remained in the unidentified hospital Sunday afternoon, Taylor said, listed in stable condition.

The others received injuries that weren't life-threatening, Taylor said.

Five people suffered gunshot wounds in an incident that occurred at a trail ride and concert that were held in a pasture off FM 2767 early Sunday morning.

According to a press release, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center got a 911 call about multiple gunshot victims at a property in the 18000 block of FM 2767 at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

Further investigation revealed that it was the location of an event organized by Unified Elite Trail Riderz from Marshall. The event was described as a combination trail ride, ATV ride, and horse show.

Multiple Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputies, a unit from the Smith County Fire Marshall’s Office, the Pct. 4 Constable’s Office, ad Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the scene.

The responding law enforcement officers learned that five gunshot victims were taken to separate hospitals in Longview, Kilgore, and Tyler. One of the five people was airlifted to a Tyler hospital because he or she had been shot in the face, the press release stated.

“Upon arrival, the location was determined to be a large pasture with numerous individuals remaining at the scene,” the press release stated. “Smith County Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene. Investigators spoke to witnesses at the scene and have identified several persons of interest they wish to interview.”

Witnesses at the scene said a fight occurred near the concert stage, and one or more trail ride groups started shooting into the crowd, the press release stated. Private security personnel had been on hand and were collecting guns from attendees before they were allowed into the concert, witnesses told law enforcement officers.

“Witnesses related that after the initial shooting that some of the groups ran to security and took their firearms back,” the press release stated. “Subsequently, a second shooting took place in that area.”

After law enforcement arrived, a third shooting incident occurred near the rear of the property, the press release stated.

“At this time, it is believed that all injuries took place during the original shooting incident as no new victims were located at the scene by law enforcement subsequent to the third shooting,” the press release stated.

According to the press release, only one victim remained in the hospital early Sunday morning and was listed in “critical but stable condition.”

Authorities obtained a search warrant to process the crime scene and collect evidence. At this time, investigators are continuing to interview witnesses.

Last Ukrainian forces in Sievierodonetsk ordered to withdraw

Last Ukrainian forces in Sievierodonetsk ordered to withdraw

Neighbouring city of Lysychansk could fall within days as Russia continues slow advance in Donbas

By Edward Era Barbacena

Source: The Guardian

The last Ukrainian forces fighting in the heavily contested eastern city of Sievierodonetsk have been ordered to withdraw in order to avoid being encircled, as fears grow that the neighbouring city of Lysychansk could also fall to Russia within days.

The anticipated loss of Sievierodonetsk is the latest battlefield reverse for Kyiv after its defeat in the port city of Mariupol. According to some estimates, about 12,000 civilians remain in Sievierodonetsk, out of a prewar population of 160,000.

All three bridges offering escape routes west over the Siverskyi Donets River to the twin city of Lysychansk have been destroyed in fighting, and the mayor, Oleksandr Striuk, says the humanitarian situation is critical.

The Luhansk governor, Serhiy Haidai, said on Friday: “The situation right now is as such that staying at these destroyed positions just for the sake of being there doesn’t make sense.” He said Ukrainian forces had “received the order to retreat to new positions and continue fighting there”, but did not give further details.

Russians were also advancing toward Lysychansk from Zolote and Toshkivka, and Russian reconnaissance units had been conducting forays on the city edges but were driven out by its defenders, he added.

Haidai said Sievierodonetsk had been “nearly turned to rubble” by continual bombardment. “All critical infrastructure has been destroyed. 90% of the city is damaged, 80% [of] houses will have to be demolished.”

In recent weeks, fierce street fighting pushed the Ukrainians back from much of the city, leaving them in control only of industrial areas.

“Our forces had to withdraw and conduct a tactical retreat because there was essentially nothing left there to defend. There was no city left there and, secondly, we could not allow them to be encircled,” said Oleksandr Musiyenko, a Kyiv-based military analyst.

Some analysts have questioned the wisdom of Ukraine’s efforts to hang on to a foothold in Sievierodonetsk despite the heavy casualties. The fall of the city will allow the Kremlin to claim it has captured almost all of Luhansk province, which together with Donetsk makes up the eastern Donbas region.

Russia now appears to be concentrating its forces on Lysychansk, the last city held by Ukraine in Luhansk province. About 6 miles south of Lysychansk, Russian troops had entered the town of Hirske and fully occupied the district on Friday, local officials said.

Maria Zolkina, a political analyst at the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation in Kyiv, tweeted that the defence of Sievierodonetsk has served Ukraine’s objectives, but now was the right time to pull back.

“Ukraine has three main goals: keep the land, keep the army and exhaust Russia’s army up to maximum,” she wrote. “[The] battle for Sievierodonetsk was more and more about exhausting [Russia’s] skilled human resources … and now it is about saving army units, who are our main resource.”

Moscow is pursuing a relentless, scorched-earth policy in its slow, grinding advance in the Donbas. The latest reverse for Kyiv comes despite an increased flow of long-range and sophisticated weapons systems from western allies to heavily outgunned Ukrainian defenders.

Russia continued on Friday to pound Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, near the border between the two countries. The regional governor, Oleh Synyehubov, told the Guardian that heavy shelling had destroyed a local university’s sports complex.

“It is the latest attack on a civilian facility which shows once again that Russian forces are targeting ordinary Ukrainians in an attempt to sow fear in the city,” he said. “It is a miracle that no one was in the building.”

Synyehubov also said Russian attacks overnight had knocked out most of the electrical and natural gas supply in the town of Derhachi on the city’s north-western outskirts. Large parts of Kharkiv remain without electricity, gas and water after months of constant Russian shelling.

Moscow has previously denied Ukrainian accusations that it has targeted civilian infrastructure, despite mounting reports by independent journalists and human rights groups that contradict Russia’s claims.

Meanwhile, in the Russian-occupied Kherson region in the south of the country, local authorities said that a Moscow-installed official was killed in a “targeted assassination”, in the latest string of targeted attacks against pro-Russian figures. An adviser to the Ukrainian governor of Kherson told local media that the assassination was the “successful work of partisans”.

The order to retreat from Sievierodonetsk followed grim assessments from outside observers over the trajectory of the battles in Ukraine’s east in recent days.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US thinktank, said in its latest assessment on Thursday that Russian forces had been making substantial gains in the Sievierodonetsk-Lysychansk area over the last few days. It said Ukrainian and Russian troops had sustained high casualties in a battle it described as a “fixation” for Moscow.

“Russian offensive operations will likely stall in the coming weeks, whether or not Russian forces capture the Sievierodonetsk-Lysychansk area, likely granting Ukrainian forces the opportunity to launch prudent counteroffensives,” the ISW predicted.

“The loss of Sievierodonetsk is a loss for Ukraine in the sense that any terrain captured by Russian forces is a loss, but the battle of Sievierodonetsk will not be a decisive Russian victory.”

Lysychansk and the main road to the city from the west came under heavy shelling on Friday after reports that Russian forces had reached outlying areas on Thursday.

Liliya Nesterenko, interviewed by AFP, said her house had no gas, water or electricity and she and her mother had been cooking on a campfire. But the 39-year-old was upbeat about the city’s defences. “I believe in our Ukrainian army, they should [be able to] cope. They’ve prepared already,” she said.

A representative of pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine earlier told AFP that the resistance of Ukrainian forces trying to defend Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk was “pointless and futile”.

“At the rate our soldiers are going, very soon the whole territory of the Luhansk People’s Republic will be liberated,” said Andrei Marochko, a spokesperson for the Moscow-backed army in Luhansk.

After a botched attempt to capture Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, in the early stage of the invasion that started on 24 February, Russian forces have shifted focus to the Donbas region, where Ukrainian forces have been fighting Moscow-backed separatists since 2014. The Russian military controls about 95% of Luhansk province and about half of neighbouring Donetsk province.

After repeated requests to its western allies for heavier weaponry to counter Russia’s edge in firepower, Ukraine’s defence minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said a response had arrived in the form of American medium-range rocket launchers.

At least 8 injured in Tacoma mass shooting outside rave event

Investigators said shots were fired as an argument happened in the back alley of the venue where the party was hosted.

By Edward Era Barbacena

Eight shooting victims were identified early Sunday morning after a large crowd was attending a rave on South Tacoma Way, according to Tacoma Police.

Investigators said an argument happened in the alley along the 4500 block of South Tacoma Way behind the private venue hosting the party and that is when shots were fired.

The first calls to South Sound 911 dispatchers went out after 12:45 a.m. when cars were reportedly seen speeding away. This area was shut down for the investigation.

Investigators said life-saving measures were taken when officers arrived on the scene.

According to the Tacoma Police Department (TPD), all eight shooting victims are in stable condition.

Officers arrived to find a "chaotic scene" with a large crowd and multiple shooting victims, according to Wendy Haddow, TPD Public Information Officer.

“We had victims that were transported to three different hospitals by ambulances and private vehicles," Haddow said. "Our detectives are spread out on these multiple crime scenes, getting information.”

Police have not released any suspect information.

A pickup truck driver in Iowa ploughed into pro-choice protesters opposing the overturning of Roe v. Wade abortion rights

A pickup truck driver in Iowa ploughed into pro-choice protesters opposing the overturning of Roe v. Wade abortion rights

By Edward Era Barbacena

A truck drove into a group of pro-choice protesters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Friday, leading to at least one woman being hospitalized.

The group of mostly women protesters was demonstrating against the landmark Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade when an unidentified man driving a black Ford truck drove into them.

The truck rolled over one woman's ankle and led to her going to the hospital, witnesses told The Huffington Post.

In videos of the incident, protesters can be seen trying to stand in the car's way and shouting at the driver to stop. He accelerates and a protester is knocked to the ground.

"I'm still in shock a little. I saw a man try to kill two women while his wife screamed and told him to stop,"  local journalist Lyz Lenz, who witnessed the attack, wrote on Twitter.

Alexis Russell, the protester seen running alongside the car in jeans and a white t-shirt, told DailyMail.com that the march of 300-400 people had been peaceful before the incident.

She described the truck driver as "a gray-haired white male dude, probably in his 50s or 60s."

Russell said she tried to stop the truck by grabbing the steering wheel, fell over, and was injured when the driver sped off.

"I think he wanted to hurt me when he sped off," Russell said. "I landed on my butt, and it really hurts, and my lower back. My inner thighs and hamstring."

She added that the woman whose ankle was injured was "traumatized" by the incident.

Another witness, local politician Stacey Walker, told the outlet that he believed at least four people were injured.

"It was pretty evident the driver didn't intend to stop," Walker told the outlet. "I'm guessing this gentleman did not agree with what we were doing."

After Friday's Supreme Court ruling, large protests broke out across the US.

Seattle Street preacher attacked in street by pro-abortion mob taunting him, destroying his Bible

Seattle Street preacher attacked in street by pro-abortion mob taunting him, destroying his Bible

Majority of the assailants were whites

By Edward Era Barbacena

Far-left extremists white mob in Seattle reportedly assaulted a number of people Saturday, including, among others, a “well-known street preacher” who’d showed up to their pro-abortion protest to read passages from the Bible.

Video footage captured by journalist Jonathan Choe of the Discovery Institute appears to show the “tail end” of the incident with the street preacher:

From the looks and sounds of it, a bunch of black-clad extremists tried to grab hold of the preacher, prompting him to grab onto a large construction sign and hold on for dear life. They in turn grabbed the sign, hauled it over to a sidewalk, and then dumped it (with him clinging to it) on the ground.

Another batch of extremists meanwhile took his Bible and shredded it. The latter incident can be seen in video footage shared by the preacher himself:⁶

The good news is that the street preacher was apparently OK enough afterward to run back into the pro-abortion protest and continue his attempted preaching.

The bad news is that, after targeting the street preacher, the extremists started targeting Choe and his security guard next.

They weren’t the only ones assaulted.

Over in apparently another part of Seattle, a young pro-life woman was pepper sprayed and shoved to the ground by black-clad left-wing extremists.

This time the assault was captured on camera.

The following couple, on the other hand, got lucky, because in their case the extremist’s pepper spray gun failed to work:

Similar riotous behavior also appeared in other cities across the nation.

Over in Phoenix, “thousands of people in support of abortion rights” tried breaking into the Arizona State Senate, prompting a security lockdown.

Arizona Senate Republicans have since labeled the altercation an “insurrection” and demanded that a Jan. 6th-like investigation be launched immediately.

Something similar almost happened back in Seattle, where “thousands” reportedly gathered outside the city’s Federal Office Building for yet another pro-abortion protest.
