Chan Tong-Kai: Hong Kong Released Murder Suspect Who Ignited the Pro-Democracy Protests

Hong Kong Protests Unmasked

Chan Tong-Kai a 20 year old murder suspect who ignited the ongoing Hong Kong protests was released on October 23.  Chan confessed to the Hong Kong government for the murder of his girlfriend Poon Hiu-Wing during their trip to Taipei on February last year.

Photo of Poon Hiu-Wing and Chan Tong-Kai

Chan murdered Poon after she admitted that the father of the baby that she was carrying was her former lover and showed a video of her having sex with another  man.  Chan admitted that he hit her head against the wall and struggled her to death before dumping her body in the bushes.  A cctv footage showed that the two were checking in a hotel in Taipei together but a day after, Chan was seen leaving alone.

The Hong Kong government could not charge Chan for a murder case because the horrendous crime took place in Taiwan and in addition, Chan couldn't be sent to Taiwan to face trial because there was no existing extradition law between Hong Kong and Taiwan. Carrie Lam together with the pro-chinese law makers proposed the extradition bill that sparked the Hong Kong protests.

The Pro-Democracy lawmakers did not acknowledge the idea of the extradition bill because such bill will also be applied to the mainland wherein Hong Kongers fear that it would only place them in mercy of the communist tyranny.  Citizens also see the bill as a way for the communist China to encroach Hong Kong.   Since the chief executive leader of Hong Kong Carrie Lam was too determined to push with the extrdition bill, the pro-democrats went out to the streets to protest and wage war against the government.

Though the bill was officially withdrawn, the Hong Kongers continued their relentless protests for the government to grant the five demands and not one less.

Chan told the media that he will voluntarily surrender to the Taiwan government to face trial and hoping that this action will ease the pain that he had caused on Poon's family and that her soul may finally  find peace.  Chan also blamed himself for the turmoil that he had caused  on HongKong. Chan was only charged and convicted for money laundering - a sentence that he already finished.

Guri Melby a politician for the Norway liberal party wrote on her Twitter account that she hopes that the nomination will provide the city's millions of protesters a "further encouragement" as they seek to force through their demands on China and Hong Kong's pro-Beijing leadership.

" I have nominated the people of Hong Kong, who risk their lives and security everyday to stand up for freedom of speech and basic democracy, to the Noble Peace Prize for 2020  I hoped this will further encourage to the movement." Melby wrote on Twitter.

Indeed the pro-democrats of Hong Kong are commendable for their high spirits to fight for the so-called " five demands and not one less." They have gone through alot of odds but still carry on the for the battle for the long road to democracy.  Even the world is sharing the sentiments of standing against the communist
tyranny and authoritarianism.

In May of 2019, she was barred from entering a Norwegian parliament  wearing a shirt with a Chinese character that reads " freedom " during a visit of Chinese Politburo standing committee member Li Zhanshu.

The protests against communism is not just the battle of the citizens of Hong Kong but the unyielding battle of every individual who takes a stance for Democracy.
