At least three people were killed and two others were injured during a shooting at a university in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, Philippine police said Sunday.

A former mayor of a city is one of the fatalities, according to police.

The suspect was armed with two handguns and was captured in a car he commandeered trying to escape from the Ateneo de Manila University in suburban Quezon City, according to authorities. He was blocked by witnesses and authorities at the gates of the university.

The sprawling university was shut down and the commencement rite at the campus law school was cancelled.

The president of the Supreme Court, Alexander Gesmundo, who was to participate as a speaker at the ceremony, received notice that he had to turn around on the way to the act, according to the authorities.

Suspect in Ateneo shooting had ‘personal motives

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Sunday said the suspect in the shooting incident in Ateneo de Manila University has “personal motives” behind the crime.

The suspect was identified as Chao Tiao Yumul, 38, a doctor and a resident of Lamitan City, Basilan, according to QCPD director PBGen Remus Medina.

The suspect had a serious reason why he committed the crime," Medina said in a press conference in Quezon City.

"Initially when we asked him, they have a long history of feud  in Lamitan, Basilan. According to them, they are exchanging cases, this doctor is always under pressure from the Furigay family, so their fight is getting personal," Medina added.

The suspect is under the custody of the QCPD and is undergoing a custodial investigation.
