An Akron woman convicted of killing her mother by stabbing her multiple times in the neck was sentenced Thursday by a Summit County Common Pleas Court judge to life in prison.

Sydney Powell, 23, will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years of her sentence, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said in a statement. The sentence from Judge Kelly McLaughlin comes after Powell was convicted by a jury last week of two counts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors say that in March 2020, Powell killed her mother, Brenda Powell, 50, at a home on the city’s northwest side. Sydney Powell struck her mother in the head with an iron skillet before stabbing her in the neck nearly 30 times.

Brenda Powell died of multiple sharp and blunt force injuries, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. She had worked for 28 years at Akron Children’s Hospital as a child life specialist.

Sydney Powell graduated from Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in 2018 and was enrolled at the University of Mount Union from August 2018 to December 2019.
