A Grade 10 male student died in an accident along Congressional Road in Dasmariñas City on Tuesday, July 4.

Dasmariñas City Police Station (CPS) Chief Lt. Col. Socrates S. Jaca told the Manila Bulletin that the jeepney just delivered coconuts at a drop-off point on the third floor of a supermarket.

Driving downhill to Congressional Road, the driver, Zaldy Bago, reportedly lost control of the jeepney due to a brake malfunction. The vehicle was heavy as it was still half-loaded with coconuts.

The jeepney accidentally hit and run over the center island, crossing over to the other lane and striking a steel fence along the road.

Renz Jether Matias, 16 years old, was wedged between the jeepney and the steel fence. He was rushed to Pagamutan ng Dasmariñas but was later declared dead.

Rene Lohera, a delivery helper who was inside the jeepney during the accident, also sustained injuries and is confined at the hospital.

The driver is now under the custody of Dasmariñas CPS and is facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.

In a statement, the Cavite Police Provincial Office reminded motorists to make sure that their vehicle is in proper condition before hitting the road to ensure safety.
