A white man recently released from a Florida prison has been charged with the fatal 2002 stabbings of a pregnant east Alabama woman and her 6-year-old son, authorities said Friday.

Lewis Landon Spivey, who served a 15-year-sentence in an unrelated case in Florida, is in the Cleburne County jail without bond following his arrest in the slayings of Monica Rollins, 23, and Dalton Rollins, 6, according to Heflin police.

“On behalf of Mayor Robby Brown, the men and women of the city of the Heflin Police Department, and the citizens of Heflin, I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Monica and Dalton,” Chief Ross McGlaughn said in a statement.

“Hopefully this will bring you some sense of closure to this awful chapter in your lives,” he added.

The mother and son were found stabbed to death in their home on Sugar Hill Drive in Heflin in September 2002.

Authorities discovered the dead victims days after the stabbings took place, police said.

Monica Rollins’ 3-year-old son was found unharmed at the house.

The investigation into the killings spanned two decades, culminating in murder warrants for Spivey on Monday, the department said.

Spivey is cooperating with the investigation and confessed to the double homicide, according to police.
