A Warren man convicted for a 2022 hate crime and deadly weapon assault will serve two consecutive prison sentences, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday.
Anthony Mangiapane yelled racial slurs at a 37-year-old Black man walking past his business on July 25, 2022, on the west side of Schoenherr Road near Eight Mile, officials said.
The man was walking on the sidewalk when he noticed a green laser dot on his chest, according to the investigation.
Mangiapane shouted at the St. Clair Shores man to leave the area and fired three shots toward him with a rifle, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office reported.
Police arrived to find Mangiapane had barricaded himself inside a business, though he later surrendered.
A bomb squad found a grenade shell and rifle casing that matched Mangiapane's weapon.
Investigators also found Nazi memorabilia and multiple weapons, including the rifle with a green laser sight that Mangiapane had pointed at the man.
Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Edward Servitto sentenced Mangiapane to 14 months to four years in prison for the assault and ethnic intimidation on Wednesday.
He will also serve two years incarceration for a felony firearm conviction, the Prosecutor's Office said.
“Today's sentencing is a solemn reminder that our community rejects intolerance. We strive to build a society where every individual can live free from fear,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement.
Mangiapane's attorney listed in court documents could not be immediately reached for comment Friday.
