A disturbing case has emerged involving Estes Carter Thompson III, a 37-year-old American Airlines flight attendant from Charlotte, North Carolina. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged Thompson with attempted sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography depicting a prepubescent minor. His arrest occurred on Thursday in Lynchburg, Virginia, and he is currently awaiting further legal proceedings.

This case centers around a deeply troubling incident on September 2, 2023, during an American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Boston. Thompson is accused of attempting to secretly record a 14-year-old girl using the aircraft’s lavatory. The DOJ alleges that Thompson directed the minor to an unoccupied first-class lavatory, where he had concealed his iPhone beneath stickers on the toilet seat to capture footage of the girl.

The girl’s awareness and quick thinking led her to photograph the suspicious setup and report it to her parents, who then informed the flight crew. The pilot was notified, leading to Thompson’s arrest upon landing. Further investigations into Thompson’s iCloud account revealed a pattern of such behavior, with recordings of minors in airplane lavatories and over 50 images of a sleeping 9-year-old unaccompanied minor.

American Airlines has expressed its grave concern and commitment to fully cooperating with the investigation, emphasizing the importance of customer and staff safety.

If convicted, Thompson faces significant prison time, supervised release, and hefty fines. This case underscores the paramount importance of protecting children and maintaining safety and security in all travel environments.
